As the Wildcats turn their attention to the 2015-16 fencing season, NUsports.com caught up with senior fencer Jen Yamin to learn a little bit about the senior foil. Yamin shares why she came to Northwestern, her pre-meet ritual and more in this edition of "Getting to Know."
NUsports.com: Why did you choose Northwestern?
Jen Yamin: I chose Northwestern because of the strong academics and fencing team. Also, I noticed from the first day I stepped on campus that the athletic department offered unparalleled support for its student-athletes.
NU: What is your favorite thing about Northwestern?
JY: The proximity to Chicago. I grew up right outside of New York City so it is nice to be able to have such easy access to a city.
NU: Where is your favorite spot on campus and in Evanston?
JY: My favorite spot on campus is the Lakefill. My favorite spot in Evanston would have to be anywhere I can get guacamole.
NU: What are your career plans?
JY: I am planning on going to law school and becoming a lawyer.
NU: Describe your pre-meet ritual.
JY: I listen to the same two songs before every meet, one by Childish Gambino and the other by Ellie Goulding. I also have to put my right shoe on first, but tie my left shoelaces before tying my right.
NU: Favorite place you have ever visited?
JY: I went to Budapest for a world cup a few years ago and absolutely loved the city. I'm definitely planning on going back there.
NU: Greatest achievement so far?
JY: One of our team's greatest achievements was beating fourth-ranked Ohio State at a dual meet last season. It gave our team entirely new confidence and proved that we really can beat any opponent.
NU: Who have been the most influential people in your life?
JY: My parents, my sister Liana, and my aunt Maggie.
NU: Who is your favorite athlete?
JY: Dwayne Wade.
NU: Tell us about some of your hobbies.
JY: I like to travel, explore new restaurants and watch old movies.
NU: How would your teammates describe you?
JY: Passionate, organized, hard working and a "grandma" because my bedtime is anywhere between 9 and 10 p.m.
NU: What are you most looking forward to this season?
JY: Winning at the Midwest Conference Championships so that we can all walk out of this season with an MFC ring.
