EVANSTON, Ill. — The Northwestern women's swimming and diving team announced their first schedule under head coach Abby Steketee today.
The slate begins with an Alumnae Meet on Friday, Oct. 16 and then continues with an intra-city matchup at Chicago (Oct. 24). In addition to Chicago, the meet will pit the 'Cats against Denison and UIC.
The Wildcats then continue on south to pay a visit to state and Big Ten rival Illinois on Friday, Oct. 30.
Chicago's Big Ten Team hosts both of their meets during the month of November. On Saturday, Nov. 14, Wisconsin will compete in Evanston and on Nov. 20-22, the 'Cats host the three-day TYR Invitational at the Norris Aquatics Center.
After the new year, the 'Cats travel to Notre Dame (Jan. 16) to match up against the Fighting Irish. The team finishes out January with two home meets, hosting Iowa (Jan. 23) and Minnesota and Purdue (Jan. 29-30).
Northwestern wraps up its 2015-16 slate with the B1G Championships (Feb. 17-21), hosted in Ann Arbor, Mich. Last year, junior Ellen Stello (Shorewood, Wis./Shorewood) took down a 25-year-old Northwestern record in the 200 fly with an NCAA 'B' provisional qualifying time of 1:58.28.
This is the first year under Steketee, who graduated from Northwestern in 2003. She previously was the head coach at Nevada, where she helped lead the team from the bottom of the WAC to third place in the Mountain West in just three years. In 2015, she was named the Mountain West Coach of the Year.
"We're going to train and compete with passion. We're going to learn from every meet and put that learning together to peak for the Big Ten Championships," she said. "The entire team is committed to peaking at Big Tens and captains Julianne Kurke, Lacey Locke, and Ellen Stello have done a great job generating focused, determined energy on the pool deck so far."
Northwestern returns 23 swimmers and divers from last season, including Annika Winsnes (Singapore/United World College), who leads all active Wildcat swimmers in the 100 Free (49.39) and the 200 Free (1:46.53).
The Wildcats also have added an accomplished crop of freshmen to their squad, including diver Olivia Rosendahl (Los Angeles, Calif./Immaculate Heart), who won a bronze medal at the 2015 World University Games in Gwangju City, South Korea over the summer.
