Wildcats earn second shutout win of the season
The 'Cats (7-3) bounced back in style following a narrow 3-2 defeat at No. 10 Maryland on Friday.
"I was really happy with the way we bounced back today," Northwestern head coach Tracey Fuchs said. "We had a great team effort and everyone contributed to our success today."
The Wildcats got on the board first a little under eight minutes into the contest as Pascale Massey found Isabel Flens inside the top of the circle and the junior fired a reverse chip blast just inside the left post past Hayley Mitchell for her team-leading ninth goal of the season.
Northwestern added on an insurance goal at 19:25 to make it 2-0. Flens got in alone on Mitchell on the right side and fed the ball across the cage to a streaking Ashley Bernardi who made a diving play to tip the ball home for the score.
NU would carry the 2-0 lead into halftime. Temple finished the opening 35 minutes of play with an 8-6 edge in shots, though the 'Cats had a 5-3 advantage in shots on goal including the two scores.
Northwestern stunned the Owls coming out to start the second half as the Wildcats took the pass back and Caroline Troncelliti raced into the circle and scored from the right side to make it 3-0 only 17 seconds into the period.
As the Wildcats continued to control the action throughout the second period, the only question down the stretch seemed to be if NU could record the shutout. Temple nearly got on the board with just over four minutes remaining when Maris Stern's initial shot was saved by Lindsay von der Luft and then Stern's rebound clanged off the post.
A minute later, Northwestern got one final score from a hometown girl. Philadelphia native Maggie Fitzgerald took a pass from Flens and knocked home the first goal of her collegiate career to complete the scoring with 2:45 remaining.
The Wildcats finished the match with a 15-13 edge in shots, though 12 of NU's shots were on goal compared to only four for Temple. Mitchell had eight saves in goal for the Owls while von der Luft recorded four to earn her second career shutout. Northwestern had three penalty corners in the match to one for Temple.
NU returns to action on the road Friday when it faces Rutgers. The contest is slated to get underway at 1:30 p.m. Central time.
