EVANSTON, Ill. — Senior forward Joey Calistri has been named the Big Ten Offensive Player of the week, the league office announced Tuesday.
This marks the fifth Big Ten Weekly honor in his career.
Calistri scored a pair of goals to lead the Wildcats to a 2-1 win in their Big Ten opener over Ohio State last Friday. The Deerfield, Illinois native scored a goal in each half, marking his 28th and 29th career goals to move into sole possession of third place in the Northwestern record books.
After being held without a goal in the first three contests of the season, the Wildcats' active career leader in goals finally got on the board in the 18th minute. A pass from Jeffrey Hopson allowed Cole Missimo to attack the baseline where he found Calistri open in the front of the net. Calistri buried the shot for his 28th career goal.,
The two-man combo hooked up again in the second half to extend the lead to 2-0. Similiarly, a lead in pass from the midfield, this time from freshman Camden Buescher, allowed Missimo to attack the goalkeeper only to open a crease for a streaking Calistri. The pass was timed perfectly and Calistri made a diving header goal for the 2-0 lead in the 62nd minute.
The Wildcats continue Big Ten play this Sunday when they travel to Ann Arbor, Michigan for a Sunday matinee against the Wolverines.
