Big Second Half Lifts Northwestern Past UC Davis, 6-2

Six different Wildcats tally second-half goals
EVANSTON, Ill. -- Six different Wildcats tallied second-half goals as No. 12 Northwestern shook loose from UC Davis after halftime to earn a 6-2 victory Tuesday afternoon at Lakeside Field.
Following a scoreless opening 35 minutes of play, the teams combined for eight goals after the intermission as Northwestern (6-2) picked up its fifth straight victory.
"We talked about moving the ball a bit quicker and taking our free hits quickly because they were double-teaming all over the field," Northwestern head coach Tracey Fuchs said. "They were tough. It was a real good battle in the first half. Fortunately, we were able to make some adjustments and move the ball a lot better in the second half and open it up a bit. It was really nice to have such balance in our scoring."
It appeared as though the Wildcats would be in for a battle following a defensive-minded first half. The Aggies held the high-powered NU attack under wraps in the opening period. The 'Cats held a slim edge of 5-2 in shots and 3-1 in penalty corners following a scoreless opening stanza.
On the heels of its halftime adjustments, Northwestern took command after the break. The Wildcats put some pressure on UC Davis right out of the break and had multiple near misses before they finally cashed in at 43:44. NU earned a penalty corner and delivered when Isabel Flens tallied her team-leading eighth goal of the year off assists from Lisa McCarthy and Charlotte Martin.
The Wildcats added an insurance goal nearly six minutes later when Charlotte Vaziri took a feed from Dominique Masters and tipped home the first goal of her collegiate career to make it 2-0. The advantage grew to 3-0 at the 54:10 mark when Eva van Agt tipped home a loose ball in front off Ashley Bernardi's assist. The floodgates continued to open with just under 11 minutes left as Caroline Troncelliti took matters into her own hands, making an impressive run down the right side and finishing near the end line for her fifth goal in three games.
Just when it looked like the Wildcats could rest comfortably, the Aggies scored two goals over a 13-second span to make it 4-2 with over eight minutes still remaining. However, goals by Masters and Bernardi allowed Northwestern to breathe easy as it wrapped up the pre-Big Ten portion of its schedule with a victory.
NU finished with advantages of 23-5 in shots (18-3 in second half) and 9-3 in penalty corners. Lindsay von der Luft made two saves to earn the victory in goal.
The Wildcats are back in action at 2:30 p.m. Central time Friday as they start their Big Ten season at 10th-ranked Maryland. The contest is being televised live by Big Ten Network.
