ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. -- Northwestern women's golf tees off the 2015-16 campaign on Monday at the Branch Law Firm Dick McGuire Invitational, hosted by the University of New Mexico, attempting to defend the team title they won by eight shots a year ago. The 37th annual event will feature eighteen teams from across the nation, including nine ranked in Golfweek's preseason Top-30.

The Wildcats 2014-15 season that began with a Dick McGuire title ended with a Big Ten Championship, the team's second in three years, and a program-best 10th-place finish at the NCAA Championships. Head coach Emily Fletcher's roster returns four golfers that received All-Big Ten accolades last year, and a fifth that won the Big Ten Individual Championship in May. Fletcher also earned her third Big Ten Coach of the Year award while Beth Miller was honored as the 2015 WGCA Assistant Coach of the Year. The program has made the trip to Albuquerque a regular part of their fall schedule.
"The Dick McGuire is hosted at the University of New Mexico Championship Course (6,315 yards, Par-73) and it is a great course to kick off our season," said Fletcher. "The course allows for some good scoring and it is located across the street from the airport so everything is very convenient. The timing of the event is important too because it allows us to compete before classes start."
The Wildcats, No. 12 in the Golfweek preseason rankings, will defend their 2014 championship against a field that features eight other programs ranked among the Top-30, including defending NCAA Champion Stanford. The full field also includes No. 22 UC Davis, Cal State Fullerton, Denver, Gonzaga, Iowa State, Miami, No. 29 UNLV, New Mexico, No. 21 Ohio State, No. 9 Oklahoma State, No. 19 Oregon, Oregon State, No. 18 Pepperdine, No. 25 San Diego State, UTEP and Washington State.
The Wildcats will see a slightly different track at UNM this season "The course setup is a little different this year," said Fletcher. "New Mexico is hosting a Regional in 2017 and the NCAA has asked tweaked the setup so I expect it to play a little tougher. I look for us to make a good amount of birdies each day to offset some of the tougher Par 4's. Finishing under par as a team would be a good goal."
The lineup tasked with that goal will feature seniors Kaitlin Park and Suchaya Tangkamolprasert, junior Kacie Komoto, sophomores Sarah Cho and Hannah Kim, and freshman Stephanie Lau. Tangkamolprasert led the Wildcats last season in Albuquerque with a second-place finish, while reirning Big Ten Player of the Year Kim kicked off her rookie season with a third-place result.
Round 1 tees off at 7:30 a.m. on Monday, with the second round to follow Monday afternoon. Round 3 will begin at 8 a.m. on Tuesday.
