EVANSTON, Ill.-- Friends and supporters of Northwestern Athletics and the late head football coach Randy Walker gathered at Ryan Field on Sunday, August 9th to honor his memory and celebrate his life at the fourth annual Run For Walk. This year, participants also supported the race's official charitable partner, Big Brothers, Big Sisters of Metropolitan Chicago.

On a warm, overcast morning, nearly a thousand runners and walkers gathered in the east lot at Ryan Field to begin the fourth event. The race, a 4.1-mile run and a 5K family walk, took participants through the tree-lined streets of Evanston and along unique campus. Everyone finished on the 50-yard line at historic Ryan Field, watching their achievement live on the videoboard. The unique race distance of 4.1 miles harkens back to Walker's uniform number, 41, when he was a student-athlete at Miami University.

Prior to the 7:30 a.m. start, Coach Walker's wife, Tammy, current head football coach Pat Fitzgerald, former NU quarterback Dan Persa and Big Brothers Big Sisters of Metropolitan Chicago CEO Art Mollenhauer, addressed the participants and offered words of encouragement. Tammy spoke of Coach Walker's for Northwestern, the surrounding neighborhood and the family's beloved dog, Magic. Persa, a member of the BBBS Leadership board, and recruited by Coach Walker, helped kickoff the race with Coach Fitzgerald.

James Akita of Elmhurst, Ill. was the top finished Sunday, posting a final time of 21:08, just seconds ahead of Chicago's Joel Bendtsen. Jeremy Ruston of East Dundee, Ill. finished third overall in 21:42.

Danelle Beeson of Evanston, Ill. led the female finishers in a time of 22:49 Sunday. Columba Montes of Chicago clocked in with a time of 23:53 and another Chicago resident, Bess Ritter Chenoweth was third at 23:56.

Participants with the football ticket redemption tag remaining on their race bib number are invited to redeem their ticket for a nonconference football game at the NU box office during regular business hours. It is important to note, however, that those tags are NOT valid on game days.

If any registrants did not pick up a Run for Walk t-shirt, arrangements should be made by e-mailing  runforwalk@northwestern.edu or by calling 847-491-7723 to set up a time to pick it up.

All participants are encouraged to share photos of the event and join the conversation on Twitter, Facebook and Instagram by using #Run4Walk and #B1GCats. A gallery of select photos is available at the top of the page.
