'Cats Battle, but Broncos Come Out on Top 1-0

NOTRE DAME, Ind. – Northwestern (3-1-0) wrapped up a two-game road trip with a 1-0 loss to Santa Clara (2-2-0) on Sunday afternoon at Notre Dame's Alumni Stadium.
"Today we dodge a few bullets early on," said head coach Michael Moynihan. "Santa Clara played different than we expected and we really had to scrap to stay in the game. Our team showed a great mentality, and we worked ourselves into the game and created some great chances. After adjusting at the half, I thought we were the more dangerous side, we just could not equalize. It was a good game and a great experience for our team early in the season."
Santa Clara and Northwestern had eight shots apiece, but the Wildcats edged the Broncos in shots on goal, 6-2. Junior Addie Steiner paced NU's offense, recording her 16th-straight multi-shot game that dates back to Sept. 21, 2014. Freshman Marisa Viggiano contributed two shots of her own.
Santa Clara broke the 'Cats shutout streak in the 22nd minute. Jenna Roering played a one-time ball to Julie Vass who tapped in the game's lone goal to the near post from seven yards out.
The Wildcats are back in action this weekend when they host a pair of games against Saint Louis and Missouri at Toyota Park. NU kicks off against the Billikens on Friday, Sept. 4, at 7 p.m., before taking on the Tigers on Sunday.
