EDINBURGH, Scotland — Northwestern sophomore Selena Lasota and Canada's U-19 team made history Saturday by defeating the United States in the gold-medal game of the 2015 FIL Rathbones Women's Lacrosse U-19 World Championship, 9-8.

The U-19 World Championship is the first in the nation's history and it came thanks in large part to the play of Northwestern's star attacker.

Lasota did what Northwestern fans became accustomed of seeing in her first year with the Wildcats, dominating on both ends of the field to earn Player of the Match honors while also being named to the All-World Team. She finished the game with three goals, two assists, three draw controls and a pair of caused turnovers in the championship.

"You have to work to win the gold," Lasota said postgame. "It's not just going to come to us. Every single girl on this team worked their hearts out and played the game of lacrosse that they love. ... We knew that we were going to come up against an incredible team and we knew that we needed to be on our game."

The Campbell River, B.C., native's third and final goal of the game proved to be the game winner when she drove hard right and fired a shot in the top-left corner to give Team Canada a 9-7 lead.
