As the Wildcats turn their attention to the 2015 volleyball season, NUSports.com caught up with junior transfer Sofia Lavin to learn a little bit about the outside hitter. Lavin shares why she chose to come to Northwestern, her pre-match ritual and more in this edition of "Getting to Know."
NUSports.com: Why did you choose Northwestern?
Sofia Lavin: Because it is one of the few schools that is academically impressive, athletically in one of the best conferences in the nation, geographically in one of the greatest cities in America and socially has great people involved with the volleyball program.
NU: How has the transition from San Diego to Evanston been?
SL: So far it has been great! The weather has been awesome, and I have been down to the beach quite a few times so there has not been that huge of a change just yet.
NU: What is your favorite thing about Northwestern?
SL: My favorite thing about Northwestern so far has been the people. Whenever I tell someone that I am not from around here they immediately want to know if I need help with anything like finding something, advice on classes or just generally making me feel welcome.
NU: Where is your favorite spot on campus or in Evanston?
SL: I have spent quite a bit of time in downtown Evanston. I love all the different coffee places to do homework and all the cute stores and restaurants.
NU: What are your future plans?
SL: Ideally, I want to work for a professional sports team in sports management.
NU: Describe your pre-match ritual.
SL: Blasting music, dancing, and visualizing myself doing what was talked about in film and the scouting report.
NU: What is your favorite place to travel to?
SL: I am partial to Spain because that is where my entire family is and where I spent half of my childhood but as far as recreational traveling I would say it is a tie between Greece and Turkey.
NU: What is your greatest achievement so far?
SL: Being where I am today. I could list awards but honestly it does not match up to living the dream I had when I was little of playing Division I volleyball and being surrounded by people that support me.
NU: Who has been the most influential person in your life?
SL: I have been fortunate enough to have been surrounded by amazing people my whole life, but I think the most influential person in my life would have to be my older sister. I did not realize how much she rubbed off on me until college when I was on my own. My competitive nature in everything that I do would not exist if it were not for the perfect opponent all those years.
NU: Who is your favorite athlete?
SL: Ronda Rousey
NU: What are some of your hobbies?
SL: Cooking, crochet, reading, bargain hunting and hanging out with friends.
NU: What are you most looking forward to this season?
SL: Experiencing a whole new conference and new opponents and being on this team with such a great group of girls.
