Magallones Shuts Down Terrapins in Series Opener, 1-0

EVANSTON, Ill. -- Senior Brandon Magallones pitched his first career complete-game shutout to lead Northwestern to a 1-0 series-opening win over Maryland on Thursday afternoon at Rocky Miller Park.
The senior tossed 91 pitches in his NCAA-leading 16th start of the season, scattering just two hits and fanning seven for the win. Sophomore Mike Shawaryn earned his second loss of the year after allowing the game's lone run in the bottom of the fifth.
The Wildcats looked as if they were going to strike first in the top of the third, loading the bases with a pair of singles and a walk for designated hitter Joe Hoscheit. The sophomore, however, flew out to deep right field as the game remained scoreless after three complete frames.
Magallones retired nine-consecutive batters until the Terps got their second hit of the contest in the top of the seventh inning, but Maryland could not capitalize on the opportunity. Magallones finished out the game without allowing another hit.
The Wildcats jumped on the board in the bottom of the fifth. Fifth-year senior Scott Heelan reached on a fielder's choice before junior Zach Jones drew a walk. Classmate Jack Mitchell launched a double through the middle to plate what proved to be the game-winning run.
The Wildcats and Terrapins return to action on Friday, May 15, at 3 p.m., for game two of this weekend's series. Junior Matt Portland is slated to take the mound for NU. The first 75 fans will receive an official Northwestern camouflage baseball hat.
Join us on Saturday, May 16, as we celebrate Northwestern's 10 seniors with a post-game Senior Day celebration.
