NCAA Tournament vs. Maryland

Wildcats' Season Ends in NCAA Quarterfinals

5/17/2015 1:19:00 PM | Women's Lacrosse

Sophomore Sheila Nesselbush leads the way with three points (2 g, 1 a)

COLLEGE PARK, Md. --   The No. 8-seeded Northwestern Lacrosse program saw its season come to an end in the quarterfinals of the NCAA Tournament Sunday afternoon, falling to No. 1-seeded Maryland, 17-5.

The loss wraps up the Wildcats' season with a record of 14-7 and ends a streak of 10-consecutive trips to championship weekend. Maryland advances to its seven-straight championship weekend where it will take on Syracuse next weekend.

The Wildcats trailed by just two at the end of the first half, 6-4, but the Terrapins opened the second half with nine straight goals to take over and ensure their placement in the semifinals.

Freshman attacker Selena Lasota and sophomore midfielder Sheila Nesselbush each scored a pair of first-half goals, but the `Cats still trailed by a pair of goals at the break, 6-4.

The Terrapins struck first on a free-position goal by Taylor Cummings at the 26:01 mark of the first half, but Lasota quickly tied things up with her first goal just two and half minutes later. Lasota came off a screen set by junior Kaleigh Craig and beat a second defender to the middle of the fan where she fired a jump shot to the top left corner for the score.

The Wildcats took their only lead of the game with just under 18 minutes left in the first half on Nesselbush's first goal as she beat her defender from the top of the fan and fired home her 26th goal of the season for the 2-1 advantage.

The Terps followed with three unanswered goals to reclaim the lead, 4-2, before Lasota beat a pair of Maryland defenders, this time to the front of the crease, and scored her 69th goal of the season to cut the deficit to one, 4-3.

The goal moved Lasota into a tie with Shannon Smith (2010) for the seventh most goals in Northwestern single-season history.

Again the Terps responded with a pair of unanswered goals, but Nesselbush was able to spin around Cummings and score her second goal of the contest with just 38 seconds left in the half to cut the deficit to two.

The `Cats won the ensuing draw control and had a chance to cut the deficit to one, but a shot in front of the crease went wide.

The Terps broke things open in the second half with their 9-0 run, scoring in the first 32 seconds and eventually scoring three goals in the first 2:30 to extend their lead to, 8-4.

The run continued with six more goals before Nesselbush found junior Kaleigh Craig with 9:52 in the game for the `Cats final goal. The goal was Craig's 46th of the season, setting a new career high for the junior.

The loss ends the careers of 10 Northwestern seniors, including Jess CarrollMikaela BozzaAmanda McLaughlinHaydyn Anigian, Paige Jones, Brooke Jones, Bridget BiancoCaley CheliosBlake McHugh and Kara Mupo.
