GREENSBORO, N.C. -- Northwestern concluded the Bryan National Collegiate Sunday in 11th place among the 18-team field at a very difficult Bryan Park Champions Course.
The Wildcats fired a final-round 17-over 305 to finish at 53-over 917 (305-307-305). Scores were sky high for all competitors, with No. 13 Wake Forest and No. 12 Virginia tying for the team lead at 36-over par. Virginia would win the tournament on the second hole of a playoff.
No. 9 NU finished three strokes in front of No. 40 N.C. State for its 11th-place finish and five strokes behind 10th-place Michigan State. No. 30 Notre Dame, No. 34 Auburn and No. 41 Louisville were in a tight bunch just ahead of the Spartans.
Northwestern began the shotgun start midway through the Bryan Park front nine and had several early birdies before the challenging Champions Course began biting back.
Kacie Komoto (Honolulu, Hawaii/Punahou) led Northwestern for the second-straight day with a 1-over 73, with just one rough stretch of holes keeping her from red figures. Komoto made birdie at the 11th before a string of three-straight bogeys at Nos. 14 through 16. She immediately bounced back with a birdie at the 376-yard par-4 17th, and then had par the rest of the way. Komoto finished just outside the top-20 with a 21st-place total of 12-over 228 (82-73-73) to complete a very nice comeback from her opening 82.
Senior Hana Lee (Seoul, South Korea/Wilson (Calif.)) finished the tournament tied with Komoto following a final-round 5-over 77. Lee had three birdies on the day and was 2-over through 17 holes, but a rough final hole led to a triple-bogey 7 at the par 4 fifth. Her 12-over 228 consisted of a 74 and two 77s.
Suchaya Tangkamolprasert (Bangkok, Thailand/Bromsgrove Christian School) started bogey-double bogey in her first two holes of the final round. She did make two birdies on the back nine to help herself before ending up at 5-over 77. She finished the tournament in 31st place at 14-over 230 (75-78-77).
Freshman Sarah Cho (San Diego, Calif./Torrey Pines) had an early birdie in her Sunday round but also had eight bogeys in her first 11 holes to stand at 7-over par. She was able to remain there the rest of the way for a closing 7-over 79, placing her 53rd overall at 19-over 235 (77-79-79).
Freshman Hannah Kim (Chula Vista, Calif./Otay Ranch) had a slow start Sunday with a pair of bogeys and a pair of double bogeys in her first six holes. After getting to that 6-over number early on, though, she fought hard to remain there, closing with seven-straight pars for a 6-over 78. Kim placed 57th in the field at 20-over 236 (79-79-78).
Northwestern is back in action April 13-14 at the Silverado Showdown in Napa, Calif.
