GREENSBORO, N.C. -- Northwestern is smack in the middle of a good pack of programs after the first round of competition Friday at the Bryan National Collegiate co-hosted by UNC Greensboro and Wake Forest.

The Wildcats carded a 17-over 305 on the opening day of the three-day tournament, ranking ninth among the field of 18 teams, just one shot behind a seventh-place Bluegrass tie between Louisville and Kentucky, and three strokes in back of a fifth-place tie between No. 19 Florida and Michigan State.

No. 12 Virginia leads the tournament at 9-over par followed by No. 13 Wake Forest at 10-over, No. 34 Auburn at 11-over and No. 18 Vanderbilt at 12-over par. Just nine strokes separate first from 10th with 36 holes to play.

Senior Hana Lee (Seoul, South Korea/Wilson (Calif.)) led Northwestern Friday and will start the second round in 10th place among the individual field. Lee had one lone blemish on the front nine, then made a second bogey at the 363-yard par-4 10th. She immediately bounced back with a birdie at No. 11, recorded a third bogey on the day at No. 13 and made par the rest of the way in for a 2-over 74.

Suchaya Tangkamolprasert (Bangkok, Thailand/Bromsgrove Christian School) had a tough front nine that included a double bogey, making the turn at 4-over 40 before turning it on during the back nine. She went birdie-birdie at Nos. 11 and 12, and though she gave a shot back at No. 13, she finished the side under par to record a 3-over 75 for the day. Tangkamolprasert is just outside the top-20 in 22nd place.

Freshman Sarah Cho (San Diego, Calif./Torrey Pines) had a day similar to Tangkamolprasert, also turning in 4-over 40 with a double bogey on the front nine. A bogey-bogey start to the back had her at 6-over with dim prospects for the round, but a birdie 2 at the 155-yard par-3 12th followed by six straight pars gave her a good recovery and a 5-over 77. She is in 31st place.

Freshman Hannah Kim (Chula Vista, Calif./Otay Ranch) had five bogeys on the front nine and just one on the back, though it was of the double bogey variety. Still, her eight back nine pars give her a little momentum moving into Saturday despite an opening 7-over 79 that puts her 48th in the field.

Kacie Komoto (Honolulu, Hawaii/Punahou) was humming along nicely in the first round of the Bryan National, standing at 1-over par through 12 holes following a birdie at the 12th. Three double bogeys and three bogeys, though, on her final six holes led to a 10-over 82.

T10 -- Hana Lee -- 74 (+2)
