EVANSTON, Ill. -- Northwestern claimed a dominating 16-6 win over No. 20 Ohio State in its regular-season finale on Saturday thanks in large part to the play of senior Bridget Bianco and freshman Corinne Wessels.
The Big Ten recognized their performances Monday afternoon naming them the Defensive and Freshman Players of the Week. The awards are the second of the season for both players.
Bianco stood out on her senior day, making 10 saves in just 49:35 of play to lead the defense in a 16-6 win over No. 20 Ohio State. It was the fourth double-digit save performance of the season for Bianco, but definitely the most impressive. She stopped 10 of the 13 shots she faced in the contest, finishing the afternoon with a .769 save percentage.
Wessels paced the Northwestern offense on Saturday afternoon, matching her season high with a pair of goals while dishing out three assists to finish with a team-high five points. Wessels had three points in the first half during a 6-0 Northwestern run, scoring a goal and dishing out two assists. She continued her stellar play with a goal and assist in the second half as well as the 'Cats ran away with the victory.
The win secured the No. 3 seed in the the Big Ten Tournament for the Wildcats. They will play No. 6 seed Michigan on Thursday at 2 p.m.
