EVANSTON, Ill. - Northwestern fell behind early, giving up five runs in the first three innings to Big Ten foe Ohio State, and could not overcome the deficit as the Buckeyes claimed the series-opener, 9-2, at the newly renovated Rocky Miller Park on Friday afternoon.

NU starter Brandon Magallones was strong out of the gates and pitched a scoreless first inning, but the Buckeyes were quick to jump on the senior righty. Ohio State used a Wildcat error to plate the first run of the game in the second frame before adding four more runs in the third. With two runners on, junior Nick Sergakis doubled down the right field line to cross both Buckeyes and junior Craig Nennig followed up with an RBI groundout for Ohio State's fourth run of the game. Before the `Cats could retire the side, OSU drove in one more run with a single to right center to take a 5-0 lead after just three innings.

Northwestern began to chip away at the deficit in the bottom of the fourth when senior Reid Hunter singled to left center to score fifth-year Scott Heelan, who reached on a base hit to right field. The `Cats were able to add one more run to the score column in the bottom of the sixth, but that is the closest they would come for the remainder of the game.

Freshman RJ Reimer and sophomore Joe Schindler backed up Magallones on the mound and surrendered just two runs over the final five frames.

Aaron Gretz paced the Buckeyes' offense and went 4-for-4 with three runs and two RBI. A strong outing from Tanner Tully held the `Cats to six hits over seven innings as the reigning Big Ten Freshman of the Year picked up his fourth win this spring.

Fifth-year senior Kyle Ruchim and Heelan paced the Wildcats' offense as the duo record two hits and one run apiece.

Northwestern and Ohio State return to action on Saturday, April 25, at 1 p.m. The game will pit Matt Portland (1-5, 4.29 ERA) for the `Cats against Travis Lakins (2-2, 3.38 ERA) of Ohio State.
