CHICAGO -- UIC threatened to knot the score in the bottom of the ninth, but fifth-year senior Kyle Ruchim made a game-ending throw to home plate to defeat the Flames, 4-3, in thrilling fashion on Wednesday night at Curtis Granderson Stadium.
The game was scoreless until the top of the third when freshman Connor Lind led off with a base hit and advanced to third after a single from junior Antonio Freschet and a sacrifice fly from Ruchim. Junior Zach Jones followed up with a single to drive home Lind as the `Cats took an early 1-0 lead.
Sophomore Pete Hofman entered in relief in the fourth and walked the leadoff man before surrendering a pair of base hits as UIC plated the tying run. With the bases loaded, Hofman walked in a run and the Flames took control of the game, 2-1.
The Wildcats made some noise in the seventh as junior Jack Mitchell drew a walk and sophomore Matt Hopfner launched a single to center field to kick off the frame. After a sacrifice bunt from fifth-year senior Cody Stevens, Lind popped out and Mitchell was caught stealing to end NU's threat.
UIC looked to add an insurance run in the bottom of the seventh, loading the bases after drawing three walks, but sophomore Joe Hoscheit worked his way out of the jam to prevent the Flames from extending their lead.
The `Cats came back scratching in eighth frame as NU loaded the bases with three-consecutive base hits. Freschet scored on a passed ball to knot the score (2-2) before Hunter drove home a pair of runs with a single through the right side.
The Flames launched a two-out single in the bottom of the ninth to cross their third run of the game and cut the deficit to just one. With runners on first and second, UIC nearly evened the score when UIC's Tyler Detmer was sent home, but Ruchim threw Detmer out at home to end the game.
The Wildcats used seven pitchers in the contest as sophomore as Hoscheit earned the win after taking over on the mound in the seventh frame. Jake Stolley closed out the game and tallied his fifth save of the year for the `Cats.
Northwestern will now turn its attention to No. 14 Iowa. The `Cats will take on the Hawkeyes, beginning Friday, April 17, at 6:05 p.m.
