No. 5 Wildcats Run Away From Rutgers, 18-6

PISCATAWAY, N.J. -- Relentless defense and a balanced scoring attack led the fifth-ranked Northwestern Lacrosse program past Rutgers inside High Points Solutions Stadium Friday night, 18-6.
The winextended the Wildcats' season-long winning streak to four games while they remained perfect against the Scarlet Knights all-time at 8-0.
The Wildcats caused chaos with high-pressure defense all night long, led by senior Jess Carroll who finished with a career-best five caused turnovers. The `Cats also held a key 18-8 advantage in the draw circle, led by team-high four from freshmen Lindsay Darrell andShelby Fredericks.
The win improved the record of Chicago's Big Ten team to 9-3 on the season and 2-1 in Big Ten play, while the Scarlet Knights dropped to 1-13 on the year and 0-3 in conference play.
The Wildcats and Scarlet Knights exchanged a pair of goals to open the contest as seniorKara Mupo and junior Christina Esposito each scored for a 2-2 tie through the first 15-plus minutes.
It was then that the `Cats took over, closing the half with six-straight goals to take an 8-2 lead into the break. Freshman Selena Lasota kicked off the run at the 13:08 with her 43rd goal of the seasonbefore junior Kaleigh Craig scored her first tally of the half three minutes later.
Senior Blake McHugh converted a free-position for her fourth goal of the season in the 23rd minute and Craig scored an 8-meter of her own with 5:55 remaining in the half to extend the lead to 6-2.
The freshman duo of Fredericks and Corinne Wessels hooked up for a goal with just over four minutes remaining in the half and Mupo closed the first-half scoring just 22 seconds later with her second goal of the game and the 8-2 lead.
The Wildcats continued the scoring barrage in the second half, finding the back of the net four more times before Rutgers ended a 10-0 run.
Senior Jess Carroll caused one of her five turnovers, pushed it to Craig in transition only for the junior to find Fredericks who went behind-the-head for a 9-2 lead. Mupo completed her hat trick just 20 seconds later and then scored goal number four of the game at the 24:01 mark on a feed from Wessels to push the lead to 11-2.
Lasota capped the 10-0 run with her second goal of the game with 21:30 remaining, extending her streak of multi-goal games to 12.
After Rutgers ended the run on Barnes' second goal of the game, freshman Hayley Ciklinrecorded back-to-back goals, one on an 8-meter and one by splitting two defenders, to extend the lead 14-3.
Sophomore Lydia Cassada, senior Paige Jones and junior Lauren Murray followed with their first goals of the season to extend the lead to 17-4. Freshman Iona Drydencapped the Northwestern scoring with her second goal of the season on an 8-meter shot.
The Wildcats will head to Long Island next where they will take on No. 9 Stony Brook Sunday at 11 a.m. CT.
