Northwestern Defeats Western Illinois to Complete Doubleheader Sweep

EVANSTON, Ill. -- The No. 21 Wildcats ended a busy tennis weekend and improved to 11-5 on the season with a 7-0 sweep of Western Illinois. It was the `Cats' second sweep of the day and fifth straight victory, after the team defeated Purdue 7-0 for their secondconference win earlier on Sunday.
Northwestern took the first point with a quick win at No. 1 doubles. Strong Kirchheimer and Fedor Baev defeated Western Illinois' Nikola Pavlovic and Surya Sawhney 6-0. Western Illinois forfeited the third doubles spot, so the `Cats needed just one doubles win to snatch the point.
It was junior Mihir Kumar who earned Northwestern's first win in singles play. At the No. 4 singles spot, Kumar dominated WIU's Jacob Sanders, 6-0, 6-0. Baev followed up his doubles victory with a 6-0, 6-0 win over Ross Smith at No. 5 singles. Freshman Logan Staggs clinched the match win for Northwestern with a 6-0, 6-0 victory over Surya Sawhney.
Singles play finished out in the remaining contests. No. 116 Strong Kirchheimer swept Pavlovic and at the top court, No. 93 Sam Shropshire claimed the Wildcats' final straight sets win 6-1, 6-0 over Chris Bunch. WIU forfeited the sixth singles spot.
Along with extending the team's winning streak, Shropshire, Kirchheimer, and Baev all notched their fifth straight singles wins.
The Wildcats look to continue their winning streak when they face Columbia on Saturday, March 14. The match begins at noon at the Combe Tennis Center.
