EVANSTON, Ill. -- Northwestern hosted the 2015 NCAA Midwest Regional at the Henry Crown Sports Pavilion and several Wildcats posted strong finishes in the test of individual skill.
Northwestern sent the full complement of 12 fencers to the strips Saturday, four in each weapon, and 11 of the 12 'Cats finished in the top 10 in their respective weapons. Junior epée fencer Helen Foster was the top finished of all the Wildcats as she earned a bronze medal in the postseason tournament.
Foster started her day by winning 13 of her 16 bouts in pool competition. She finished third in the group after enetering the event as the 10th seed among 17 fencers. Foster only three losses were against Ohio State's Eugenia Falqui, who would go on to win gold, Nicole Ameli of Notre Dame, the silver medalist, and UND's Courtney Lee, who finished fifth.
Northwestern's other three epée entrants, Kaitlyn Wallace, Juliana Barrett and Mandeep Bhinder, finished sixth, seventh and eighth respectively. All three won at least 10 bouts on Saturday.
Four 'Cats also finished in the top 10 in the women's sabre event, led by sophomore Alisha Gomez-Shah's fifth-place showing. Cindy Oh was right behind her classmate in sixth place, while Ania Parzecki was ninth and Julia Abelsky finished 10th. Gomez-Shah won eight pool bouts, while Wayne State's Julie Saint-Cricq won 10 bouts with a +32 indicator to claim the gold in sabre.
Seeking a second consecutive berth in the NCAA Championship, junior Jen Yamin led the foil squad with a seventh-place finish behind nine wins in the pool.Sophmore Stephanie Chan won eight bouts (+7) to finish eighth, while freshman Kaila Budofsky also won eight times (-3), finishing in 10th place overall. Junior Charlotte Sands came in 12th Saturday.

Next, the Wildcats will seek a 16th consecutive top-10 finish at the NCAA Championship. This year's event will be held in Columbus, Ohio from March 20-22.
