Northwestern Hosts NCAA Midwest Regional Saturday

EVANSTON, Ill.
-- Northwestern continues its march through the postseason Saturday when it hosts the 2015 NCAA Midwest Regional at the Henry Crown Sports Pavilion beginning at 9 a.m. on Saturday, March 7. In addition to the Wildcats, Cleveland State, Detroit Mercy, Lawrence, Notre Dame, Ohio State and Wayne State will be in attendance.

Each team is able to enter a maximum of 12 fencers and no more than five an a particular weapon. NU, which is ranked seventh in the latest CollegeFencing360.com coaches poll, will send its allotted amount with four in sabre, four in epée and four in foil.

The women's events begin Saturday at 9 a.m. with the men to follow approximately 1 p.m. Northwestern will send a quartet of sophomores into the women's sabre event. Julia Abelsky and Alisha Gomez-Shah will look to lock up repeat trips to the NCAA Championships later this month, while Cindy Oh and Ania Parzecki will also represent the 'Cats in the postseason event.

The epée squad, which won a thrilling Midwest Fencing Conference championship over Ohio State on Feb. 21, will also send four talented fencers to the strips. Junior Kaitlyn Wallace, who secured the win against the Buckeyes, will lead the group that includes juniors Juliana Barrett and Helen Foster and sophomore Mandeep Bhinder. The entire group will be seeking an inaugural NCAA Championship bid.

Junior Jen Yamin is the lone member of the foil squad with the NCAA Championship bouts under her belt. She will be joined in action Saturday by classmate Charlotte Sands, sophomore Stephanie Chan and freshman Kaila Budofsky.
