MORAGA, Calif. - Junior Zach Jones' RBI single in the top of the fifth was the only scoring for the Northwestern baseball team in a 17-1 loss to St. Mary's at Louis Guisto Field on Wednesday evening.
The Gaels used big innings to pull ahead for the win, including a six-run third inning, and two three-run frames in the second and eighth innings.
Jones' RBI was his team-leading 14th of the season. The Wildcats scattered seven hits throughout the game, including a pair of singles from Jones. Northwestern used five pitchers as starter Reed Mason earned the loss after allowing four runs on six hits in the first two innings. Freshmen Justin Yoss, Richard Fordon and JR Reimer and junior Jake Stolley also saw time on the bump for NU.
St. Mary's was led at the plate by two hits and three RBI from first-year Logan Steinberg. On the mound freshman Wes Malik earned the win after pitching five innings and allowing one run on five hits with four strikeouts in the victory.
The Wildcats open Big Ten play with a three-game series against Minnesota, beginning Friday, March 27, at 3:05 p.m. CST. The game will be broadcast live on BTN Plus on BTN2GO.
