LAS VEGAS - The Wildcats outhit the Rebels in Saturday's nightcap, 14-11, but it was not enough as UNLV claimed an 11-8 win to prevent Northwestern from a doubleheader sweep on Saturday night.

Senior Kyle Ruchim went 2-for-5 on the night and added three runs and an RBI for the `Cats. Sophomore Joe Hoscheit contributed two RBI and a solo run, and junior Zach Jones tallied a RBI and run in four at-bats.

Northwestern struck first against the Rebels as Ruchim double to left field to open the contest. Hoscheit chopped the ball over the head of the third baseman to bring home his teammate.

Despite the early lead, UNLV responded quickly and the Rebels put up two unearned runs in bottom of the first. A pair of NU errors combined with three hits and a walk gave UNLV an early 3-1 lead.

The Wildcats came back scratching and added three runs of their own in the following frame. First-year Grant Peikert walked and advanced to second on a passed ball before scoring when Ruchim reached on an error. Junior Zach Jones and senior Scott Heelan teamed up for consecutive RBI doubles to take over, 4-3. Ruchim followed up with a solo homerun to left field in the top of the third for a two-run gain.

The Rebels went on the attack in the fourth and fifth inning, adding five total runs for a 9-5 advantage. UNLV held Northwestern without a run for four-straight innings.

The `Cats attempted to play catch up in the top of the eighth, adding three runs off a pair of RBI groundouts and a double from Hoscheit. Unfortunately for Northwestern, its late rally fell short and UNLV took control of the series (2-1).

The series finale is scheduled for Sunday, March 22, and sophomore Joe Schindler is slated to take the mound at 3:05 p.m. CST. The right-hander is 1-1 with 17 strikeouts and only one walk in 12.2 innings of work in four appearances this season.
