COLUMBUS, Ohio -- Four of six Wildcats in Columbus, Ohio for the NCAA Fencing Championships sit in position to nab All-America honors after day one of the two-day tournament.
Each weapon battled through three of five rounds Saturday at the French Field House at Ohio State. All fencers partook in 15 bouts during the first day with eight more on tap for Sunday. Epée fencer and junior Juliana Barrett is the highest standing Northwestern fencing after her 15 contests. Barrett won 11 bouts, one shy of the leader, but her +16 indicator leaves her second behind Cornell's Victoria Wines.
NU's second epée entrant, Helen Foster, won three times.
One of Northwestern's two returning NCAA Championship qualifiers, Alisha Gomez-Shah is also lurking near the top of the leaderboard in women's sabre. The sophomore ranks fifth with 10 victories, while teammate Cindy Oh, who is at her first NCAA Championship, won seven times in the sabre pool.
Two Wildcats also represented the Purple and White in the women's foil field. Junior Jen Yamin, who qualified for her second consecutive national tournament, won eight times to land in 14th after day one. Sophomore Stephanie Chan, a first-time qualifier, is 23rd with three wins.
As a team, Northwestern compiled 42 points on the first day. The Wildcats can earn up to 48 more points on Sunday. Full results are available at the top of the page.
Day two will begin at 8 a.m. with the championship bouts slated for approximately 12:45 p.m. CT. The semifinals and final for each weapon will be televised live on ESPN3.com.
