EVANSTON, Ill. -- One weekend after fencing 13 teams in two days, No. 7 Northwestern had an abbreviated slate Saturday with only a pair of duals in Durham, N.C. The Wildcats took down North Carolina, 19-8 before disposing of Duke, 20-7.

NU first took on the Tar Heels, a team that it recently faced at the NU Duals at the Henry Crown Sports Pavilion on Jan. 31. The 'Cats won that clash, 19-8, and they had little trouble in the rematch, winning by an identical score.

Northwestern's epée squad led the way with seven wins against UNC. Helen Foster led the way with a 3-0 record, while Mandeep Bhinder won twice in two bouts. Both the foil and sabre squads posted 6-3 victories. Julia Abelsky won three times in sabre, while Cindy Oh notched a pair of wins. Jen Yamin led all foilists with three wins in the first matchup of the day, while Mary Spohn, Mikela Goldstein and Charlotte Sands also collected wins for the 'Cats.

After downing Duke at the Western Invitational on January 17 in Colorado Springs, Colo., 18-9, Northwestern increased its margin of victory on the Blue Devils' home turf, winning Saturday by a score of 20-7. Foil led the way in the final contest of the day, winning eight of nine bouts. Sands and Yamin both went unbeaten in three tries and Stephanie Chan also picked up a couple of wins.

Epée, once again, won 7-2, behind three wins from Juliana Barrett and a pair from Bhinder. Foster won two more times against Duke, as well. NU's sabre squad squeezed out a 5-4 triumph with Alisha Gomez-Shah and Oh picking up multiple triumphs.

Northwestern will break from collegiate competition next weekend. Select members of the team will travel to Richmond, Va. for the USA Fencing Junior Olympics. The event begins on Friday, Feb. 13 and continues through Monday, Feb. 16.
