Larner Knocks Off Second Ranked Opponent Friday

EVANSTON, Ill. – Northwestern picked up a win from freshman Erin Larner but ultimately fell to the No. 6 Baylor Bears on Friday by a 5-1 score.
Larner knocked off her second ranked opponent in 2015 with a 6-0, 6-4 win over No. 125 Kiah Generette. Larner took control early, posting a first set shutout before placing one right on the line to take the second set and the match.
The Northwestern freshman is now 4-2 in the dual season and 17-6 overall.
The 33rd-ranked Wildcats (3-3) were competitive across the board Friday night, but Baylor proved too strong with nationally ranked players on almost every court.
Alex Chatt moved up to the third singles spot after starting the season 5-0 and winning each of the 10 sets she had played. Chatt went up against 37th-ranked Blair Shankle and lost a 6-3, 6-2 decision that was much closer than the score would indicate. Alicia Barnett also faced a tough opponent in No. 23 Ema Burgic and dropped a 6-2, 6-3 decision at No. 1.
Baylor got on the board first with a pair of doubles wins at Nos. 1 and 2. The Wildcats won the first match of doubles play when Chatt and Leung soundly defeated Generette and Anderson, 6-0, at No. 3. The Bears responded with a 6-1 win at No. 1 and a 6-2 victory at the second position to claim the match's first point.
Northwestern is back at the Combe Tennis Center on Sunday when the 'Cats take on the 35th-ranked Texas Longhorns at 11 a.m.
