EVANSTON, Ill. -- Ninth-ranked Northwestern spent much of a snowy Sunday inside the warm confines Henry Crown Sports Pavilion where it picked up six more wins, including one over No. 10 Temple, to conclude the 2015 NU Duals.
After posting a record of 4-2 on day one, Northwestern opened the final day with a match against UC San Diego, a team that it beat during the Western Invitational in January, 21-6. The Wildcats posted a repeat performance this time around, downing the Tritons by the same score.
Freshman Katie Van Riper won three times for Northwestern's epée squad, as did Helen Foster. Mikela Goldstein picked up three wins in foil, while her classmate Charlotte Sands went 2-0. Sophomore Ania Parzecki notched a pair of wins in sabre, as did fellow second-year fencer Cindy Oh.
The Wildcats met Air Force, another squad it saw at the Western Invitational, in the second round Sunday. NU's sabre squad led the way during a second-straight 21-6 triumph with eight wins, including three each from Julia Abelsky and Alisha Gomez-Shah. Jen Yamin won three of the foil squad's seven bouts.
Round three pitted the 'Cats against No. 10 Temple, a team that defeated NU by one point at last weekend's Philadelphia Invitational. Northwestern broke through in a big way with a dominant 20-7 win over the Owls on its home turf. The foil squad ignited the bounce-back win by taking eight of its nine bouts. Yamin won three times once again, as did sophomore foilist Stephanie Chan. Epée won seven times over Temple, with three coming by way of Juliana Barrett.
The road did not get any easier as Northwestern tangled with another top-10 foe, Princeton, in round four. The final was score was not indicative of how well the Wildcats fenced, but Princeton won 22-5. Ten of the 27 bouts were decided by only a single touch. Gomez won two bouts for the home team in sabre,
Northwestern took on Cal Tech in the fifth round and it was an opportunity for the 'Cats to display their depth across the board in a 24-3 victory. Van Riper and Foster went unbeaten once again in epée, while freshman Lucia Procopio got in on the action with three victories in foil.
The Wildcats roared through round six by blanking the Detroit Titans, 27-0. Alex Kain collected two epée wins, while senior Tina Umanskiy and sophomore Kayla Kelch each won twice in foil.
Northwestern's final foe was the Cleveland State Vikings. The Purple and White pounded CSU 26-1 with a few more 'Cats picking up nice wins. The foil squad especially got some fresh faces involved with Kimmy Fishman, Stella Pointeau, Michelle Lee, Sarit Kapon and Stefani Kahookele all coming out on top in the final round.
The hosts finished the two-day competition with a record of 10-3, including a pair of top-10 wins over No. 6 Penn and No. 10 Temple. The Wildcats are 36-4 overall in 2014-15.
Northwestern will be back on the road next weekend when it travels to Durham, N.C. for the Duke Duals on Sunday, Feb. 8.
