EVANSTON, Ill. – Jason Tsirtsis finished second at 149 lbs. after a 3-1 sudden victory loss vs. Iowa's Brandon Sorensen during the championship match at the 53rd annual Ken Kraft Midlands Championships on Wednesday night at Welsh-Ryan Arena.
Tsirtsis and Sorensen have seen three of their four meetings go extra time and neither has ever scored more than three points on the other. They had split the first two overtime meetings and the overall series is now tied at two.
Each wrestler managed an escape after starting on the bottom in the second and third periods and the match went to extra time tied at one. A scramble ultimately went Sorensen's way, and he took the championship at 149 lbs. Tsirtsis won the title last season.
"I am proud of the tournament that Jason put together," interim head coach Matt Storniolo said. "He was the aggressor throughout the final bout, and I think everyone watching knows he wrestled the better match. We will learn from this and look forward to seeing Sorensen again in 11 days."
The third-ranked Tsirtsis and second-ranked Sorensen are projected to meet again on Jan. 10 when the Hawkeyes travel to Evanston for a 2 p.m. dual meet at Welsh-Ryan Arena.
Dominick Malone finished fifth at 133 lbs. after a medical forfeit by Iowa's Cory Clark during the nightcap.
Malone went 6-2 during the Midlands and is 15-4 on the season. He has 12 wins by fall or tech fall this year.
Northwestern finished ninth in the team standings with 61 points.
