Post Game Notes

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - Senior Maggie Lyon led a quartet of Wildcats in double figures with a career-high 31 points as No. 15 Northwestern rolled past North Carolina, 85-72, in the 2015 Big Ten/ACC Challenge on Wednesday night at Charmichael Arena.

Nia Coffey poured in 22, Christen Inman added 16 and Ashley Deary scored 12 as that trio, plus Lyon, accounted for 81 of the Wildcats' 85 points on the night.

Chicago's Big Ten Team improved to 7-0 with the win.

Deary led the squad in assists for the fifth time this season and recorded her 400th-career helper in the first quarter. Deary became just the fourth active Big Ten Player to surpass the 400-assists mark.

The Wildcats used three 3-pointers from Lyon, Deary and Inman to highlight an early 11-0 lead. The Tar Heels broke up NU's early surge with a jumper in the third minute of action, but the 'Cats held UNC without another bucket until the five minute mark in the first quarter.

North Carolina was unable to string together consecutive shots the remainder of the quarter, and Chicago's Big Ten Team led 28-11 after 10 minutes.

Northwestern did not slow down, building its lead by as much as 28 points in the first half. The Tar Heels used four free throws in the final minutes, but NU entered the halftime break with a 52-29 lead. The 'Cats 52 first-half points were the most in a single half so far this season.

The Tar Heels opened the second frame with seven unanswered points to come within 16, but three-straight buckets capped with an Inman triple gave the 'Cats a 23-point advantage to close out the third frame.

North Carolina stormed back in the fourth quarter, outscoring Northwestern by 10, but the Wildcats hot start gave them plenty of breathing room to leave Chapel Hill with a win for the Big Ten.

Northwestern shot 47 percent (34-72) from the field, 39 percent (9-23) from 3-point range (9-23) and 57 percent (8-14) from the free-throw line. North Carolina connected on 40 percent (29-73) of its shots, including 14 percent (3-21) from beyond the arc and 69 percent (11-16) from the free-throw line. The Tar Heels won the rebounding battle, 46-37.

The Wildcats return home to Welsh-Ryan Arena on Sunday, Dec. 6, when they host Milwaukee. Tip off is set for 2 p.m. CST.
