McCarthy, Troncelliti pick up first-team honors
EVANSTON, Ill. -- Five members of the Northwestern field hockey team have earned All-West Region recognition from the National Field Hockey Coaches Association (NFHCA).
Senior back Lisa McCarthy and senior forward Caroline Troncelliti were named to the first team, while senior midfielder Charlotte Martin, junior midfielder Dominique Masters and junior forward Isabel Flens received second-team accolades.
The all-region honor is the fourth of McCarthy's stellar career. After being named to the second team as a freshman, she was a first-team honoree each of her final three seasons. McCarthy spearheaded Northwestern's back line and was a reliable defender, helping the Wildcats post a 1.53 goals-against average. Offensively, she contributed three goals with a team-leading 13 assists (second in the Big Ten) to the NU attack.
Troncelliti earned the first all-region accolade of her career. The speedy forward was a threat in NU's high-powered attack, finishing fourth on the squad with 10 goals while adding three assists for 23 points. She also was named a second-team All-Big Ten selection this season.
Martin picked up her second all-region award after being named a first-team honoree as a junior in 2014. The always-reliable midfielder was a steady influence for Northwestern both offensively and defensively. Her 12 assists ranked second on the team to only McCarthy while ranking third in the Big Ten. She previously was named a second-team All-Big Ten selection this season.
Flens was one of the top goal scorers in the Big Ten, helping her earn her recognition. She tallied 16 goals in 2015 to rank second on the team and third in the Big Ten. The dynamic forward was a second-team All-Big Ten honoree this season. In addition to her goal total, she contributed seven assists for a total of 39 points.
Masters' second-team selection follows up her first-team award from a year ago. The powerful hitter paced the Wildcats with 17 goals and 41 points this season. Both totals ranked second in the Big Ten. She also led the league with 123 shots which was 31 more than the individual who ranked second in the category.
