NEW YORK CITY – Northwestern wrestling opened up the 2015-16 dual season by splitting a pair of matches at the fourth annual Grapple at the Garden in New York City on Sunday.
The Wildcats beat Franklin & Marshall in the second dual of the day by a 30-18 score with pins by Dominick Malone, Bryce Brill and Luke Norland. Garrison White, Mitch Sliga and Regis Durbin were also winners in the dual for Northwestern.
"The guys showed a lot of promise," interim head coach Matt Storniolo said. "It was nice seeing a few guys go 2-0. We learned a lot about our team today and will be better in the long run for competing in this event."
Brill was nothing short of dominant on Sunday, also picking up a tech fall in the first match of the day to go with his pin. He won by fall over Andy Francos in just 50 seconds. Brill started the day with an 18-2 tech fall of Drexel's Richard Viruet.
Luke Norland won the first two matches of his Northwestern career, coming from behind to win in each. In his first match against Drexel's Austin Rose, Norland trailed 6-1 but fought all the way back to win an 8-6 decision in sudden victory. He erased a 4-2 deficit vs. Gordon Bolig of Franklin and Marshall and won by fall to help put the Wildcats securely ahead in the dual.
"Winning my first two matches representing Northwestern in a world renowned arena was awesome," Norland said. "It was a fantastic beginning to my career, but I know I have a lot of room where I can and will improve."
Malone was also undefeated on Sunday, winning by fall against Franklin and Marshall's Scott Stevens in just 56 seconds a match after a convincing 10-3 win over David Pearce of Drexel.
Northwestern dropped the first dual of the day to Drexel after a 20-20 tie left the decision up to criteria. The officials had to go deep into the tiebreak scenarios to pick a winner, ultimately giving the Dragons the victory based on a 46-44 advantage on individual match points.
Chicago's Big Ten Team is right back out to the east coast next weekend with matches at Princeton and Rider on Dec. 5. The Wildcats wrestle Princeton at 10 a.m. and Rider at 2 p.m.
