#B1GCats Sweep Lone Star Showcase with Win Over East Carolina
11/28/2015 9:33:00 PM | Women's Basketball
CEDAR PARK, Texas - Senior Maggie Lyon led a quartet of Wildcats in double figures and matched a career-best 26 points as Northwestern (6-0, 0-0 B1G) closed out the Lone Star Showcase with a 78-75 win over No. RV East Carolina (6-2, 0-0 American) on Saturday night at the Cedar Park Center. The Wildcats were the only squad in an eight-team field to go undefeated in the tournament.
Juniors Ashley Deary, Nia Coffey and Christen Inman joined Lyon in double figures and combined for 48 points. Coffey added 12 rebounds to her performance for her third double-double of the season.
"We played a really tough game against a really competitive East Carolina team," Coffey said. "I am really proud of the resilience that our team showed today and am excited to return to Evanston with the Lone Star Showcase trophy."
The #B1GCats jumped out to an 8-0 lead, thanks to pair of 3-pointers from Lyon. East Carolina broke Northwestern's early surge with a couple of free throws and proceeded to hold NU without a bucket for the next four minutes.
The Pirates took an 11-8 lead with 3:46 left in the first frame, but the 'Cats were able to level the game in the final minute, 14-14. ECU mustered up a pair of free throws to hold a two-point advantage after 10 minutes.
Deary opened the second stanza with five points of her own to put Chicago's Big Ten Team back on top. The teams exchanged baskets throughout the second frame, but the 'Cats went 5-for-5 from the field down the stretch to enter the halftime break with a 37-26 lead.
Lyon tipped off the third frame with a triple and a layup to build a double-digit advantage for NU. The Wildcats went ahead by as much as 16 with two minutes left in the quarter, but ECU began to chip away at the deficit. Trailing by 11, an East Carolina jumper sparked a 14-3 surge as the Pirates cut the deficit to just two points.
The squads leveled the game on three different occasions in the last three minutes. With 25 seconds left on the clock, ECU missed a triple and Lyon snagged the rebound to force the Pirates to call for a timeout. It was not enough to rattle the 'Cats as Inman drained a layup with 11 seconds left on the clock.
Inman followed up with two free throws in the last five seconds to secure the Wildcats' sixth win of the year.
Northwestern shot 44 percent (32-72) from the field, 40 percent (6-15) from 3-point range and 44 percent (8-18) from the charity stripe. East Carolina connected on 42 percent (27-65) of its shots, including 36 percent (5-14) from beyond the arc and 80 percent (16-20) from the free-throw line. The Pirates won the rebounding battle, 49-34.
The Wildcats get a short break before heading to North Carolina for the Big Ten/ACC Challenge. NU will tip off against the Tar Heels on Wednesday, Dec. 2, at 5 p.m. CST.
This is the second all-time meeting between the Wildcats and Tar Heels as North Carolina won the first and only matchup. These two squads met during the 1993-94 season when the Tar Heels recorded a 98-75 win over NU.
