No. 19 #B1GCats Open Lone Star Showcase with Win Over Eastern Washington
11/26/2015 6:54:00 PM | Women's Basketball
CEDAR PARK, Texas - Junior guard Christen Inman recorded a career-high 28 points as Northwestern (4-0, 0-0 B1G) opened the Lone Star Showcase with a 74-70 win over Eastern Washington (3-2, 0-0 Big Sky) on Thanksgiving Day.
Inman led the Wildcats in scoring for the first time this season and added five rebounds, four steals and two blocks. Classmate Ashley Deary notched her second-consecutive double double with 13 points and a season-high 10 steals along with seven assists.
Co-captains Nia Coffey and Maggie Lyon joined the Texas natives in double figures with 17 and 10 points, respectively, as Lyon pulled down 10 rebounds for her third-career double-double.
The Wildcats struggled to find rhythm in the opening minutes of the contest as NU failed to connect on its first six field goals. Eastern Washington jumped out to an early 8-0 lead, but a Deary jumper sparked a 7-0 run for Chicago's Big Ten Team.
The 'Cats allowed just one more bucket for the remainder of the quarter and closed out the first 10-minutes of play with a 19-10 advantage.
Eastern Washington would not surrender, however, and the Eagles held Northwestern scoreless for four minutes to open the second period. EWU leveled the game at the 19 mark, but back-to-back steals and a pair of layups from Deary gave the 'Cats the momentum they needed. Northwestern built a 29-21 cushion, highlighted with six points from Deary, with five minutes remaining in the second frame.
The Eagles chipped away at the deficit down the stretch, but the Wildcats entered the halftime break with a slight 33-32 advantage.
Chicago's Big Ten Team took over in the second half, leading by as much as 11 in the final seconds of the third quarter, but Eastern Washington continued to challenge NU.
The Eagles used a couple of free-throw opportunities capped by a trey to come within three points with 3:19 on the clock. Inman's last minute tip-in secured a career-high 28 points for the Texas native before freshman Jordan Hankins closed out the game with a pair of free-throws for the win.
Northwestern shot 43 percent (32-74) from the field, 24 percent (5-21) from 3-point range and 42 percent (5-12) from the charity stripe. Eastern Washington connected on 39 percent (22-57) of its shots, including 41 percent (11-27) from the arc and 71 percent (15-21) from the free-throw line. The Eagles outrebounded the 'Cats 45-39.
The Lone Star Showcase continues tomorrow (Nov. 27) when the 'Cats square off against Creighton. Tipoff is set for 7:30 p.m. CST.
