Northwestern Uses Balanced Offense to Sweep Iowa
11/21/2015 9:08:00 PM | Women's Volleyball
IOWA CITY, Iowa – The Northwestern volleyball team got back in the win column Saturday night with a dominant performance on the road at Iowa by sweeping the Hawkeyes, 3-0.
The Wildcats used a balanced offensive attack to keep Iowa guessing with four players tallying more than 15 attempts. Symone Abbott led the way for the second straight match with 11 kills and was joined by Kayla Morin, who also reached 11 on the night.
"We are at our best when we spread the ball around the floor," head coach Keylor Chan said. "When we are able to get everyone involved, it keeps the other team guessing and allows us to be successful."
Northwestern hit .266 as a team, its best mark since hitting .310 in a win over Michigan State on Oct. 31.
"We really want to focus on getting the ball to more than just our outside hitters and when we are able to do that, good things happen," said setter Taylor Tashima, who ended up with 35 assists.
The Wildcats defense was equally impressive, racking up 10 total blocks and limiting the Hawkeyes to just a .117 attack percentage.
Maddie Slater had a match high six blocks, including the team's only solo block. Five Wildcats tallied blocks in all.
"We felt like we had a good understanding of what Iowa was going to do tonight," Chan said. "We were able to get our hands on some balls at the net and get some points to go our way."
Northwestern used an 8-2 run to close out a 25-23 first set win. The Wildcats scored five in a row and six of the last seven in the frame to come from behind and grab the early advantage.
Chicago's Big Ten Team improved to 13-0 this season when it wins the first set.
The second set provided a little more breathing room for the Wildcats, but barely. There was only one lead change, and when Northwestern got the lead they didn't relinquish it, holding on for a 25-21 win going into the break.
Northwestern opened the third set on fire, scoring five straight before Iowa was able to get on the board. All in all, the Wildcats scored eight of the first ten points to open up a lead they would not lose. The 'Cats won the set, 25-18, to finish off the match.
The Wildcats travel to University Park, Pa. on Wednesday to take on the No. 4 Penn State Nittany Lions at 6 p.m. Northwestern beat the Nittany Lions, 3-2, on Oct. 10 at Welsh-Ryan Arena.
