EVANSTON, Ill.— The Northwestern Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (S.A.A.C.) kicks off its annual food drive this week to benefit Family Focus of Evanston, a Chicago-based non-profit organization that provides support and programming to local families and children.
Wildcats fans will have their first opportunity to donate food items this Friday, November 20, when the men's basketball team hosts Columbia for a 7 p.m. tip in Welsh-Ryan Arena. The collection continues on Sunday, November 22 when women's basketball hosts Western Michigan at 2 p.m.
"The canned food drive is an opportunity for all Northwestern student-athletes to come together during the holidays to give back to our community," says Elena Miller, a member of the cross country team and S.A.A.C. vice president.
This year's goal is to collect 5,000 non-perishable food items, which the Wildcats will deliver to Family Focus by Dec. 4. This year's canned food drive challenges NU's student-athletes across 19 varsity sports to engage in a spirited competition to outdo and out-collect each other to feed as many families as possible this holiday season.
"It's a way for all of us to individually contribute to a cause while engaging in friendly competition amongst the teams. We're excited to collect more cans than last year," Miller added.
Fans that donate will be given the opportunity to purchase a Group Rate Ticket for $3 to women's basketball and $15 for men's basketball. Those who donate Friday will be entered into a raffle to win a basketball signed by men's basketball head coach Chris Collins. Donors at the women's game on Nov. 22 will have the opportunity to enter a raffle to win a basketball signed by Wildcats head coach Joe McKeown.
"Events like this do so much to strengthen the bonds not only from teammate to teammate, but from student-athletes to the rest of the community at large," said S.A.A.C. co-president Garrison White, a senior on the Wildcats wrestling team. "Through these bonds, we hope to build an interactive community that thrives together."
