Northwestern Outlasted by Purdue on Sunday

EVANSTON, Ill. – Abbie Kraus tied a career high with four aces and Taylor Tashima handed out 37 assists, but Northwestern fell to No. 17 Purdue 3-1 on Sunday afternoon at Welsh-Ryan Arena.

"We're coming really close to winning big matches," head coach Keylor Chan said. "We have the hardest schedule in the nation and we're right there. We just haven't pushed through to win [consistently]. But when we do, and I say when, this group has a chance to be special."

Facing a Purdue squad that picked up its 20th win, the 'Cats relied on strong performances from senior Caroline Niedospial and sophomore Symone Abbott.

Niedospial, who moved into second place on Northwestern's all-time digs list earlier this month, added 19 more to her career total against the Boilermakers.  Providing the Wildcats with a reliable defensive anchor, the senior libero also chipped in four assists to give the 'Cats a boost on offense.

"She's been the heart of the back row as a defender and a passer," Chan said. "We'll definitely miss her, but it's not over yet."

Kraus also praised her fellow senior for her leadership both on and off the court.

"She's been super steady, but then just so passionate at the same time. That's what makes a great libero," she said.

Northwestern ran their offense through Abbott on Sunday, as her high-flying kills kept the Boilermakers off balance throughout the match. She chipped in 16 of them and hit .342 to lead Chicago's Big Ten Team.

After dropping the first two sets, Northwestern came alive in set number three with a 25-17 victory over Purdue.  That performance was sparked by unbelievable service play from Kraus. The Birmingham, Ala. native recorded four aces for the Wildcats, including two in the set.

"I just went out there and decided I was going to do whatever I could for my team to win. I really just tried to ace the hell out of them," Kraus said.

Northwestern will be back in action on Saturday, November 28 when it welcomes Maryland to Welsh-Ryan Arena for a 2 p.m. start. The match will mark Senior Day for the 'Cats, as Kraus and Niedospial play their final regular season game in Evanston.
