EVANSTON, Ill. – Nia Coffey scored a game high 27 points, reaching 1,000 for her career, and Ashley Deary handed out seven assists as Northwestern coasted past Howard 89-49 in a season-opening victory on Sunday night at Welsh-Ryan Arena.
"I'm proud of the way we opened the season. We got a little bit sloppy late in the game, but it gives us some idea of the things we've got work on," head coach Joe McKeown said.
The Wildcats dominated from the opening tip, showing no signs of rust in an impressive victory. Northwestern shot over 49 percent from the floor in a balanced offensive performance, using Coffey and Deary to push the tempo.
Coffey reached the 1,000-point milestone early in the first half on a free throw. The Minneapolis, Minn. native was in midseason form against the Bison. She couldn't be stopped on the fast break and knocked down ten free throws, part of her 27-point performance to lead Chicago's Big Ten team.
"It's an honor to coach her," McKeown said. "She is so humble and when you have a player like that, who doesn't care who gets the credit, it makes my job a lot easier."
Deary also began the season with a bang, as Northwestern's junior point guard scored 16 points to go along with her seven assists.
The outcome was never in doubt after the first few minutes, as Northwestern raced out to an early lead behind Coffey's hot start and the three-point shooting of Christen Inman. The junior guard knocked down three treys as part of an 18-point night.
In total, the Wildcats outscored Howard 21-0 from beyond the arc.
"We can get really hot. We can hit 10 or 12 threes in a 20-minute stretch, but we go cold sometimes too," McKeown said. "We do a good job when we can spread the floor."
Several young players also impressed against the Bison, with freshman Jordan Hankins scoring 13 points in her Northwestern debut.
"She's a very aggressive offensive person and she definitely brings something off the bench," Coffey said. "She's a really big spark for us."
The Wildcats are back in action on Thursday night for a 7 p.m. matchup with the Idaho State Bengals at Welsh-Ryan Arena.
