BRIDGEVIEW, Ill. —
Northwestern (6-6-2, 3-3-0 Big Ten) and Michigan State (7-5-2, 2-1-2) traded blows on Saturday, but it was the Wildcats who came out on top thanks to an 89th-minute stunner from Mike Roberge on Senior Day at Toyota Park.

The 'Cats had a picture-perfect opportunity as the clock was winding down with a set piece play started by freshman Camden Buescher. He sent the ball off to senior Henry Herrill, who set up an opportunity for Roberge to head the ball in for a game-winner.

"In these kind of grind-it-out Big Ten games when it comes down to one play, I thought [Henry Herrill] made a great play keeping that ball in-bounds and obviously Mike Roberge was there to knock it home," said head coach Tim Lenahan.

Early on in the first half, Michigan State came out firing after a corner kick by senior Jason Stacy, but a would-be goal was called off by the officials. Senior goalkeeper Zak Allen went on to stop the rest of the Spartans' chances in the half.

In the 43rd minute, Stacy drew a set piece for the Spartans and hit a shot on target, but junior Nathan Dearth was well-positioned to block the ball away and keep the score tied at zero.

On the Michigan State side of the ball, Stacy led the team in shots, recording six over the course of the match. Senior goalkeeper Zach Bennett had three saves.

Allen came up clutch for the Wildcats in the second half as well. In the 75th minute, freshman Ryan Sierakowski had a scoring opportunity for Michigan State which was saved by Allen, his seventh and final save of the day.

"They were really on us in the second half," said Lenahan. "I thought Zak [Allen] was phenomenal, making a couple of big-time saves. I thought, defensively, we also played really well. Layth Masri was back and was really calm on the ball back there. Usually teams will try to press a little bit and they weren't really able to do that because Layth was so good on the ball."

Saturday's game was senior day for the Wildcats, as they honored their eight senior student-athletes, including Joey Calistri, who is second on the all-time Northwestern scoring list with 30 goals.

"Good for our guys," Lenahan said. "We've had some ups and downs this year and we've battled through a lot of stuff, so good for them to have a moment like this."

The Wildcats will kick off a three-game road tour to close out the regular-season with a match against Loyola on Oct. 27.
