Wildcats Dominate in 3-0 Win Over Spartans

Northwestern finishes with 25-1 edge in shots

EVANSTON, Ill. -- No. 16 Northwestern thoroughly dominated Michigan State in posting a 3-0 victory Sunday afternoon at Lakeside Field.

Coming off consecutive overtime losses to ranked foes, the Wildcats were in complete control throughout Sunday's contest. NU finished the match with whopping advantages of 25-1 in shots and 19-0 in penalty corners.

Northwestern earned four penalty corners in the first five minutes of the match, but they were unable to convert to take the lead. The Wildcats struggled to take advantage of the opportunites as they managed only one total shot in the four chances.

Even though the hosts dominated possession over the opening 35 minutes of play, the Spartans were able to keep the 'Cats in check. Northwestern finished with a 9-0 edge in shots and an 8-0 lead in corners in the first half, but the teams carried a scoreless tie into halftime.

The Wildcats honored members of their 1994 Big Ten champion and NCAA semifinalist squad at halftime and NU finally cashed in on the scoreboard soon aftern the intermission.

The team's ninth penalty corner of the game finally resulted in a goal as Dominique Masters knocked a shot past Katie Miller at 37:52 for her 10th goal of the year, giving Northwestern the lead. Lisa McCarthy was credited with an assist on the play.

Nine minutes later, the Wildcats added an insurance goal thanks to another penalty corner opportunity. This time, Isabel Flens took the scoring honors as she tallied her team-leading 14th goal of the season off assists from McCarthy and Charlotte Martin.

Remarkably, Northwestern didn't allow a single shot attempt by the Spartans over the opening 66 minutes of play. Despite the lack of offense, Michigan State was only one shot away from getting back within a goal. The Spartans nearly got back in the game when Megan Fenton fired a blast from the top of the circle, but Lindsay von der Luft made a terrific save to deny the visitors.

The Wildcats added on one final goal at 67:48 when Flens fired a reverse-stick feed to Eva van Agt who was waiting at the back post to tip it in for her 10th goal of the year.

Northwestern returns to action at 2:30 p.m. Central time Friday when they travel to Ohio State for their final Big Ten road game of the season.
