EVANSTON, Ill. -- Northwestern won four matches Saturday, including one over a top-10 team, to open the NU Duals at the Henry Crown Sports Pavilion in exciting fashion Saturday.

The Wildcats opened the day with 16-11 victory over the Stanford Cardinal. It marked the second victory of the season against Stanford. NU's foil squad posted seven wins, while the epée squad added six.

Round two saw the Wildcats face No. 6 Penn in a rematch from last week's Philadelphia Invitational. Northwestern lost the first battle, 14-13, but on its home turf, NU flipped the script to secure a one-point triumph of its own. The final both came down to Wildcat sophomore Stephanie Chan and Luona Wang. Chan delivered in the clutch and notched a 5-3 victory that sent her teammates into a frenzy. It marked the second time that in as many weeks that Northwestern edged a top-10 team. Freshman Kaila Budofsky also stepped up and delivered three of her team's six foil wins. Julia Ablesky won two sabre bouts against Penn, as well.

The 'Cats faced off against No. 5 Ohio State, looking to knock off the Buckeyes for the second time in six days. Northwestern battled the Buckeyes well, but ultimately fell 15-12. NU's sabre squad won five-of-nine bouts with Cindy Oh and Alisha Gomez-Shah each winning twice.

The hosts continued down the gauntlet with a match against top-ranked Notre Dame. NU's sabre unit won five times once again against the Fighting Irish. Abelsky and Gomez-Shah each won twice against UND. Juliana Barrett also won twice for Northwestern's epée squad.

Following the lunch break, the Wildcats got back on track with a 19-8 triumph over the North Carolina Tar Heels. Epée won seven bouts, while foil and sabre won six times each. Newcomer Katie Van Riper added three wins in epée to lead the 'Cats over UNC.

Northwestern's day concluded with a match against Fairleigh Dickinson. The Wildcats closed out in fine fashion with a 16-11 triumph. Sabre led the way with seven wins and epée added six. NU's Ania Parzecki went 3-0 in sabre, as did freshman Anna Tolley in epée.

Day two of the NU Duals will commence on Sunday, Feb. 1 at 8 a.m. Northwestern will fence seven matches throughout the day, beginning with UC San Diego.
