PHILADELPHIA -- No. 9 Northwestern picked up three more wins Saturday as it opened a busy weekend on the east coast at the Philadelphia Invitational, hosted by No. 6 Penn.

After weather caused the event to start a bit later than planned, Northwestern hit the strips in the opening round against Cornell, a squad that is receiving votes in the initial CollegeFencing360 coaches poll that was unveiled this week. The Wildcats posted wins in all three weapons (F: 6-3, E: 5-4, S: 8-1) to remain undefeated on the season and cruise to a 19-8 win over the Big Red.

Stephanie Chan posted a 3-0 record in foil, while Julia Abelsky and Alisha Gomez-Shah also went a combined 6-0 in sabre. Mandeep Bhinder and Helen Foster added two wins apiece for the epée squad.

In round two, Northwestern squared off against a team that hails from the City of Brotherly Love, the 10th-ranked Temple Owls. The Wildcats won five of nine epée matches with Bhinder claiming the clincher, 4-3. However only four-of-nine in both foil and sabre went NU's way to allow Temple to escape with a narrow 14-13 victory.

Juliana Barrett went 3-0 (epée) against the Owls, while newcomer Kaila Budofsky added a pair of wins in foil.

Both the foil and sabre squads bounced back in the following round against No. 6 Penn by winning six bouts apiece, however the epée squad was only able to post one victory and the 'Cats narrowly fell once again, 14-13.

Sophomore Cindy Oh was unbeaten in three sabre bouts against Penn, while Barrett edged her foe for Northwestern's lone victory in epée.

The fourth round saw Northwestern roar back with a 19-8 victory against Sacred Heart. NU's foilists led the way with seven wins against the Pioneers. Head coach Laurie Schiller was able to rotate some fresh faces onto the strip in the fourth round. Sophomore Ania Parzecki won all three of her sabre bouts, while frehman Anna Tolley went 2-0 in epée. Senior Mary Spohn and junior Charlotte Sands also won twice in foil.

The Wildcats closed out their stint in Philly with their third 11-point win of the day, 19-8, against Johns Hopkins. Yamin and Sands both went 3-0 in foil in the final round, while Spohn added two more wins to her total. Parzecki notched three more sabre wins without a loss and Foster notched two more triumphs in epée.

Northwestern will travel approximately 90 miles from Philadelphia to Jersey City, N.J., where it will participate in the NYU Invitational on Sunday, Jan. 25. The competition, which takes place at the Cobra Fencing Club, is scheduled to commence at 8 a.m. EST/7 a.m. CST. NU will face three top-5 teams Sunday, including top-ranked Notre Dame.
