ORLANDO, Fla. -- Following two days in which Northwestern challenged for the lead at the inaugural Annika Intercollegiate co-founded by the Annika Foundation and Golfweek Magazine, the Wildcats had a rough go Tuesday in the final round to finish 7th among one of the top college golf fields that will assembled this season.
Northwestern entered the day in third place, three strokes behind the leader, South Carolina, and started an impressive 5-under par through three holes to remain hot on the tail of the equally surging Gamecocks. Their roads diverged on the Reunion Resort Watson Course woods, however, leading South Carolina to a 6-under par day and a seven-shot victory in the tournament, while NU ended up with an 8-over par 296 and a seventh-place result at 7-over 871 (286-289-296).
To revisit field strength at the inaugural Annika Invitational, 10 of the field's 12 teams advanced to the NCAA Championships last year with all 10 finishing among the top-18 in the country. Duke (1), USC (2), UCLA (3) and Arizona State (5) all earned top-5 results in the NCAA a year ago. Northwestern placed 15th nationally for the second-straight year.
Fully one-third of the field now heads to Chicagoland for Northwestern's home Windy City Collegiate Classic Oct. 6-7 at Westmoreland Country Club in Wilmette, Ill. Second-place Arizona, third-place Oklahoma State and sixth-place USC will join NU in the 15-team field.
Senior Hana Lee (Hacienda Heights, Calif./Wilson) led Northwestern in the final round Tuesday with a 1-under 71 to give her bookend under-par efforts at the Annika Intercollegiate. Lee had a wild opening nine with four birdies and three bogeys to turn in 1-under 35, then flattened the roller coaster with a nine-par back side. Lee, who suffered a 78 in Monday's second round, jumped up the leaderboard to place 29th overall at 4-over 220 (71-78-71).
Freshman Hannah Kim (Chula Vista, Calif./Otay Ranch) carded a pair of par-5 birdies in her final round Tuesday, but a quartet of bogeys led to a 2-over 74. Kim finished the event in 38th position at 6-over 222 (75-73-74).
Junior Kaitlin Park (Tustin, Calif./Beckman) had Northwestern top individual finish in the tournament with an 18th-place 1-over 217 (70-72-75). She played the front nine Tuesday in 2-over par and tried to fight back with a birdie at No. 10, but she immediately followed that effort with bogeys at Nos. 11 and 12 to contribute to her final round 3-over par number.
One stroke behind Park in the individual standings was junior Suchaya Tangkamolprasert (Bangkok, Thailand/Bromsgove International School), who finished 22nd at 2-over 218 (71-71-76). After back-to-back 1-under 71s to start the tournament, Tangkamolprasert seemed headed for more of the same after an even-par front side. A tough back nine, however, led to a finishing 4-over 76.
Kacie Komoto (Honolulu, Hawaii/Punahou) birdied her first hole of the final round, but then played the rest of the day in 6-over par for a Tuesday 5-over 77 and a 54-hole total of 8-over 224 (74-73-77), placing her 42nd in the field.
