Wildcats Edge Crusaders 1-0 in Late-Night Matchup

9/18/2014 12:00:00 AM | Men's Soccer

EVANSTON, Ill. -- Cole Missimo's goal early in the second half helped send a huge crowd home happy as Northwestern pulled off a late-night 1-0 win over Valparaiso on Wednesday night at Lakeside Field.

The contest, which kicked off at 9:30 p.m., drew 2,151 fans including the Northwestern University incoming freshman class.

Neither team was able to tally in the opening half of play, though the Wildcats earned three corner kicks and put three shots on frame against Crusaders keeper Nico Campbell. Meanwhile, NU didn't surrender a corner kick while Valpo managed just two shots, neither of which were on goal against Tyler Miller.

The 'Cats finally broke through at 51:24 when Joey Calistri slithered a pass to Missimo who beat Campbell at the near post from six yards out, giving Northwestern a 1-0 advantage.

Valpo continued to push forward in the closing minutes of the second stanza in search of the tying goal. Stian Sandbekkhaug and Nick Suker both had good look against Miller but each of their shots missed wide of the cage.

Held without a corner kick for the first 83 minutes of the contest, the Crusaders earned a pair of corners down the stretch but the Wildcats were able to hold the visitors at bay to hold on for the victory.

Miller needed to make only one save to earn his 31st career shutout, building upon his school-record total. Northwestern finished the contest with advantages of 9-7 in shots and 5-2 in corner kicks.

The result was a quality one for NU as Valpo entered the contest with a 2-0-2 record and a No. 4 ranking in the NSCAA Great Lakes Region.

Northwestern returns to action at 4 p.m. Sunday when it opens its Big Ten home season against Michigan at Lakeside Field. The contest follows a noon matchup between the Northwestern women's team and Indiana.
