LINCOLN, Neb. -- Boasting its best non-conference record since 2007, the Northwestern women's soccer team opens Big Ten Conference play on Thursday afternoon in Lincoln, Neb., against the reigning Conference champion Cornhuskers. The game, scheduled to kick off at 2:30 p.m. CT will be broadcast worldwide on the Big Ten Network and BTN2Go.
Head coach Michael Moynihan's Wildcats wrapped up their six-game non-conference slate with a 1-0 win at Saint Louis last weekend, posting a 4-1-1 record overall. Northwestern is unbeaten in its last five tilts, and has surrendered just one goal over those five matches.
A big reason for that defensive efficiency has been Big Ten Defensive Player of the Week Lauren Clem, the Wildcats freshman netminder. The Stevensville, Mich., native piled up 14 saves in back-to-back road shutouts last weekend and has allowed just two goals in more than 539 minutes of action thus far in her rookie campaign.
Nebraska and Northwestern are meeting for the seventh time in series history, with the Huskers holding a 5-1-0 advantage. The two sides last met last September at Lakeside Field where, despite outshooting the visitors by a 24-10 margin, the Wildcats fell 2-1.
Northwestern's offense this season has been led by sophomore Addie Steiner, who ranks third in the Big Ten with six goals in six games. Classmate Kim Jerantowski has chipped in with two markers, including the game winning strike last Sunday in the team's 1-0 win over the Billikens.
