Second-Half Tallies Lift 'Cats Over QU, 2-0

EVANSTON, Ill. -- Undeterred by a lightning delay that interrupted the second half of their 2014 season-opener, head coach Tim Lenahan and Northwestern emerged victorious with a 2-0 blanking of Quinnipiac in the second game of the Sheraton Chicago-Northbrook Lakeside Classic Friday night.

The threat of severe weather 10 minutes into the second half sent the teams to the locker room for approximately 30 minutes, but shortly after play resumed the Wildcats notched the game's decisive tally. Senior Nikko Boxall, who was dangerous on set-piece opportunities throughout the game, buried a rebound from a Nathan Dearth header that was set up by Brandon Medina's corner kick. It was the sixth career goal for the standout defender from Auckland, New Zealand.

With less than a minute remaining, junior Joey Calistri tacked on an insurance goal in transition -- the 22nd score of his Northwestern career -- with helpers credited to freshman Sam Forsgren and senior goalkeeper Tyler Miller

Though chances on goal were sparse in the opening half of the first-ever meeting between Northwestern and Quinnipiac, the Wildcats created the two most promising opportunities of the frame. At the 27-minute mark, a Northwestern corner kick was controlled by the Wildcats in the 6-yard box, but a pass in tight spaces to the touch line was deemed offsides, negating the NU goal that was scored just a moment later.

Midway through the half, Northwestern had another chance at goal when Miller sprang Calistri with an accurate long ball from his own box. Calistri latched onto the end of it but was met by QU goalkeeper Borja Angoitia at the top of the penalty area, with Angoitia executing a well-timed tackle to dispossess Calistri.

As the two teams searched for the go-ahead goal after intermission, they were joined at Lakeside Field by an impending thunderstorm in the Evanston area, forcing the teams and fans to pause play and seek shelter with 35:33 showing on the scoreboard.

Fortunately, the delay was relatively short-lived and the two teams were back on the field in 30 minutes, allowing for Boxall to lift his team to the lead with his 57th-minute goal.

Northwestern continued to have the better of possession against a Quinnipiac side that last year owned an impressive 7-1-2 record in the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference. The Bobcats were credited with just one shot on the night compared to seven for the Wildcats, who forced four saves by QU's Angoitia between the pipes.

The win was Northwestern's first in a season-opener since a 1-0 victory over San Francisco to begin the 2008 campaign.

The Wildcats wrap up play at the 2014 Lakeside Classic on Sunday when they take on Hofstra at 1:30 p.m. CT. The Pride played to a scoreless tie with Northern Illinois Friday night in the match preceding Northwestern and Quinnipiac. Single-game and 2014 season tickets are available for purchase at the entrance to Lakeside Field.
