EVANSTON, Ill. – The Northwestern men's soccer team is off to a 2-1 start in the Wildcats spring schedule, with a trip to take on the Clemson Tigers on the horizon Friday night.
Through three matches, one against Northern Illinois and a pair against Canadian club squads in East Lansing last month, sophomore Joey Calistri, the Big Ten's leading goal scorer during the 2013 fall season, has already tallied four goals for the 'Cats.
“We always try to challenge ourselves in the spring. We've split up the winter and spring to play three games in each quarter to keep the guys motivated throughout the winter,” Northwestern head coach Tim Lenahan said. “It's an important time for us as the freshmen now understand what it takes to be successful and the rising seniors start to ascend to leadership roles. We are happy to have 5th year senior Layth Masri back after his missed last season with an injury.”
After a break following Saturday's match against Clemson, Northwestern faces Oakland in the Bucks College Cup and the 'Cats will try to defend their back-to-back Chicago Cup Championships in a four team tournament featuring Loyola, DePaul and UIC. NU wraps up its spring slate against Lewis and UWGB on April 27. After May 1, players will spend the summer with their club teams before Northwestern begins its fall season.
“I want to thank all our donors who contribute to the Wildcat Fund. One of the trips we raise funds for is our annual trip via sleeper bus to play an ACC team,” Lenahan said. “With the winter we have had, playing outdoors on Bermuda grass in 70-plus weather against a quality team like Clemson certainly is one of the highlights.”
