Wildcats Fall In Penalty Kicks To Hoosiers In B1G Tournament

11/9/2014 12:00:00 AM | Men's Soccer

EVANSTON, Ill. -- When 110 minutes of play left the No. 16 Wildcats and No. 2 Hoosiers deadlocked at one, it all came down to penalties.

It was a scene that senior goalkeeper Tyler Miller had experienced before. His freshman year, the `Cats went up against Indiana in the first round of the Big Ten Tournament and went to penalties. That time, he stopped three of the Hoosiers' shots and helped lead the `Cats to a Big Ten title.

This time, however, it didn't go his way. Even though he stopped one, the `Cats fell 5-4 in a six-round penalty shootout. Indiana will advance to the Big Ten Semifinals next weekend, while Northwestern will have a week to rest, traing and await their NCAA Tournament draw.

"[I] just wanted to stay confident," Miller said. "You're not going to save them all. I knew if I saved one, then we would have a chance." He did get that stop, but Northwestern missed the target on two attempts, allowing Indiana to advance.

"One [of the positives] is that we got to go to a PK shootout, feel the pressure of a PK shootout, which you may see in the NCAA tournament," head coach Tim Lenahan said.

The Hoosiers started the scoring in the 17th minute when Dylan Lax put in his first goal of the year. Lax stepped into a shot from the middle of the field, 20-yards from goal, and snuck a low shot past a diving Miller and inside the left post.

But in the 38th minute, the `Cats responded with a goal of their own -- this one off of a free kick. Sophomore midfielder Brandon Medina knocked a ball into the box that was headed into the net by senior defender Nikko Boxall, who was facing away from the goal and directed the ball just inside the far post for his second goal of the season.

"I was really proud of the guys and how they responded," Lenahan said. "They pushed. We were playing the last 15 minutes of the first half as if we were a goal down, to get that equalizer."

From there, it was a tight game through regulation and overtime. When it came down to penalties, senior Eric Weberman missed the cage high and Northwestern's final shooter, sophomore Drew Rosenberg, rattled his attempt off the crossbar.

They'll be back in action when the NCAA tournament kicks off.

"I was really proud of the way the guys played against a top team," Lenahan said. "Our goals for the program is, first and foremost, to make the NCAA tournament, and that's where we're at this year."
