WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. -- The Iowa Hawkeyes managed to do something no opponent had managed in nearly a month, defeat the Northwestern women's soccer team. The Wildcats fell 1-0 in the Big Ten Semifinals on Friday afternoon on the campus of Purdue University, bringing to a close a tremendous run for Michael Moynihan's squad over the final five weeks of the Conferene season.
Northwestern earned their spot in Friday's semifinal with a 1-0 upset victory over top-seeded Penn State, the nation's No. 6 team, on Wednesday. The Wildcats entered the showdown with fifth-seeded Iowa aiming to avenge a 1-0 loss to the Hawkeyes in Iowa City in September.
Immediately from the opening kickoff, the 'Cats dominated possession and pushed forward with aggression. Addie Steiner's speed was difficult for the Hawkeyes back line to handle, and the sophomore had several good opportunities. Off the bench, Kim Jerantowski and Michelle Manning both created great chances that just missed the goal.
From the back, Big Ten All-Freshman Team member Nikia Smith and classmate Kassidy Gorman pushed the pace up the wings while Jackie Alyinovich and Margo McGinty provided the stability in the middle to collapse any Iowa attack. The Hawkeyes most dangerous opportunity of the opening half came with less than a minute remaining, buyt freshman goalkeeper Lauren Clem was up to the task to turn away a point-blank opportunity. he two teams went into the halftime break scoreless.
The second half provided more of the same. Early in the period, K.K. Barr roped a shot from the right wing that banged off the crossbar and rattled the goal frame.
In the 67th minute, senior Sami Schrakamp lofted a tricky, looping shot just over the bar. On the ensuing goal kick Iowa progressed down the field and, against the run of play, lifted a cross in from the right corner that slipped just over the outstretched hands of Clem and into the net inside the far post to give the Hawkeyes a 1-0 advantage.
The remainder of the game was played within 35-yards of the Iowa goal, as the Wildcats threw everything they had offensively at the Hawkeyes net. Despite a total of 19 shots in the game, Northwestern was unable to find an equalizer, falling 1-0.
