Wildcats Open NCAA Tournament Thursday At Lakeside Field

EVANSTON, Ill. -- Northwestern men's soccer is headed back to the NCAA Division I Men's Soccer Championship, announced today as one of 24 at-large selections. The Wildcats are in the postseason for the ninth time under the direction of head coach Tim Lenahan, and will host SIU-Edwardsville at Lakeside Field on Thursday, Nov. 20, at 4:30 p.m. CT.
The winner of Thursday's opening round matchup will advance to take on 15th seeded California on Sunday in Berkeley. Tickets for the first round tilt will be available at the Lakeside Field box office or by calling 888-GO-PURPLE. Tickets will be complimentary for Northwestern students, and free coffee and hot chocolate will be available for all fans.
The Wildcats finished just one point away from a Big Ten regular-season championship in 2014, posting a 4-1-3 record in the Conference. Northwestern was 9-3-6 overall and a sterling 7-0-2 at Lakeside Field.
Six Big Ten men's soccer teams earned berths to the 2014 NCAA Division I Men's Soccer Championship. In addition to Northwestern, Indiana, Maryland, Michigan State, Ohio State and Penn State all secured bids, tying the 2004 Big Ten record of six teams advancing to the tournament.
The first round of the NCAA Tournament will be played on Thursday, while second-round games are scheduled for Sunday. The third round is slated for Nov. 30, while the quarterfinals will take place from Dec. 5-Dec. 6. The semifinals and championship match will be played at WakeMed Soccer Park in Cary, North Carolina, on Dec. 12 and Dec. 14, respectively, with the matches being aired live on ESPNU and WatchESPN.
