WILMETTE, Ill. -- After a rough start Monday in the first round of the Seventh Windy City Collegiate Classic at Westmoreland Country Club left Northwestern near the bottom of the pack, the Wildcats bounced all the way back up to second place following 36 holes of play with the best score of the second round.

NU stands at 11-over 587 (300-287) after bettering its morning score by 13 in the afternoon. The Wildcats are six behind tournament leaders USC, two in front of third-place Oklahoma State and five shots in front of fourth-place Tulane.

Northwestern was mired around 14th place midway through the morning round before recovering to finish the first trip around Westmoreland in eighth place. In the afternoon, a similarly slow start materialized before NU got hot around the turn -- led by freshman Hannah Kim's (Chula Vista, Calif./Otay Ranch) four-straight birdies from Nos. 7 through 10. Birdies became contagious, leading the Wildcats to notch 16 of them during a 1-under 287 second-round effort.

Tulane's Emily Penttila holds the individual lead at 7-under 137 after matching the Westmoreland women's course record with a 6-under 66 in Monday's afternoon round.

Kim's morning round for Northwestern was nondescript. She was 1-over par through 16 holes before finishing bogey-bogey for a 3-over 75. In the afternoon, she beat her previous collegiate-best score of 69 earned in NU's first tournament of the year with a 4-under 68 that also flirted with the course record. After her hot streak around the turn, she went birdie-birdie at Nos. 13 and 14 to reach 6-under par. Bogeys at 16 and 18 denied her the record, but shot her 21 spots up the leaderboard into fifth at 1-under 143 (75-68).

Junior Suchaya Tangkamolprasert (Bangkok, Thailand/Bromsgrove Christian School) fired identical 73s Monday to earn an 11th-place position entering Tuesday's final round at 2-over 146 (73-73). In the morning, a double bogey at No. 9 led to a 1-over 37 on the front side, then Tangkamolprasert played even-par golf on the back for her 73. In the afternoon, Tangkamolprasert had similar scoring. She had back-to-back bogeys at Nos. 2 and 3 early and another bogey later in the day at No. 13. Birdies at Nos. 7 and 13 gave her the second 73 on the day.

In the first round, senior Hana Lee (Hacienda Heights, Calif./Wilson) suffered a pair of double bogeys that led to her being 5-over par through 16 holes. The veteran then gave a harbinger of what was to come in Northwestern's day when she birdied 17 and then drained a putt from off the right front of the 18th green, jarring it into the back left hole location for another birdie and a 3-over 75 in the morning.

Lee had a much less volatile second round, turning in 1-over 37 and then negating an early bogey on her back nine with another birdie at the 18th to card a 1-over 73. Lee is in 18th place at 4-over 148 (75-73).

Sophomore Kacie Komoto (Honolulu, Hawaii/Punahou) epitomized Northwestern's team day with her Monday rounds. In the morning, she turned in 5-over 41 before stabilizing with an even-par back nine to shoot 5-over 77. In the afternoon, Komoto went 37-36 to improve to a 1-over 73 and move up 20 spots in the standings from the morning to sit in 26th position at 6-over 150 (77-73).

Junior Kaitlin Park (Tustin, Calif./Beckman) struggled to a 7-over 79 in the first round, going the entire way without a birdie. More of the same happened in the second round when she turned in 3-over 39 following a four-bogey front side, then her part in NU's rocket ride up the leaderboard kicked in. On the back nine in the afternoon, Park birdied both of the par-5s to come home in 2-under 34 and card a 1-over 73, sending her 25 places up the leaderboard from the first to the second rounds to stake her to 37th position at 8-over 152 (79-73).

Three Wildcats played Monday as individuals, led by freshman Sarah Cho (San Diego, Calif./Torrey Pines) with identical 3-over 75s. In her opening round, Cho was 4-over through 13 holes before finishing with three birdies and two bogeys in her final five holes. In the afternoon, two late bogeys on her 16th and 17th holes of the day led to the same result. Cho is in 26th place at 6-over 150 (75-75).

Senior Katie Wooliver (Cincinnati, Ohio/St. Ursula Academy) went 77-84 on her day to stand 71st at 17-over 161. Sophomore Minjia Luo (San Diego, Calif./Torrey Pines) is two shots behind Wooliver in 75th at 19-over 163 (82-81).
